Today is a day on the bus. After 3 nights of concerts a rest for my mouth may be good. Last nights concert was a blast. The high jazz band was their along with the other 2500 people. What a crowd. As always they loved the music.
Today I will listen to tons of music (computer, MP3 with head phones) anad study my real book, outline chords, and study more Glenn Miller Music.
New trumpet player arriving today to sub for our lead player while he gets his knee fixed. Brand new drummer starts Monday. Our drummer Brent is leaving for a 6 month tour in Europe staring in Greece.

So, are guys kind of in and out of there the whole time?
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you mean????
ReplyDeleteWow, I wouldn't sweat a sub player here and there, but a sub for lead trumpet AND a new drummer? Has to be a whole new level of players in your world right now.
ReplyDeleteDo the guys rotate in and out frequently or have some been with the group a while? Do you contract to play a certain period of time? Can they replace a player at any given time due to lower than expected performance?
Mr. Ratliff worded my question the way it sounded in my head.
ReplyDeleteYou can be fired at anytime. They have to give you 2 seeks notice. There is a long list of musicians waiting a hoping to play in this group. There are no contracts. Yours and there word is your band on this band. After you have been here a few weeks they will tell you if you can stay or need to move on. I have been told I can stay. Some guys have been in this band for over 20 years. Others do come and go. No young married guys get on this band or other bands like this one. It just doesnt work. Older guys seem to do ok.
ReplyDeleteYou can get fired if you are a super stud player. Noone wants to be around jerks. Those attidudes last about 24 hours. No notice during your first week or so. Yes, you can get fired for low performance.
The subs that come in read the book very well or they don't sub anymore. Our sub lead trumpet read the book pretty perfect the first night. Our regular guy will be back in two weeks.
The drummer read the book pretty close the first night and on the money the second.
